Pyron’s men didn’t hold long. Chivington—who, though a rank amateur, seems to have had natural military talent—quickly deployed his superior force so that it overlapped the Confederates on both ends of their line. His men worked their way up the canyon walls on both sides, overlapping the Rebels and threatening to surround them. The little cannons barked defiantly but did little real damage. The two officers assigned to command the guns, expecting no immediate trouble, had remained in Santa Fe to oversee some equipment repairs. The guns were manned by three inexperienced noncommissioned officers and some volunteers. They fired too high to be effective, but it confused many of the novice Colorado troops and caused Captain George Howland’s company of U.S. Regular Cavalry (Third U.S. Cavalry) to break in confusion when their horses proved unmanageable—or when the troops were overcome by fear, depending on the observer’s opinion. Chivington soon reestablished control and threatened to overwhelm the game little Confederate force.
